Alma gave birth in the back of a dog catcher's truck! At only 1-year-old, she has experienced more trauma than any dog should.

Alma was rescued in Guanica, Puerto Rico in the nick of time. She was in the the back of a dog catcher's truck, which means she was on her way to her death. There's only one outcome for the dogs in those trucks. Luckily for Alma, a good Samaritan stopped the truck and refused to let him go until all the dogs were surrendered to a compassionate volunteer.

Puerto Rico is a scary, lonely place for a stray dog. People are cruel. Dogs are regularly hit by cars and left to suffer without help for their injuries. They are poisoned. Abandoned. The animals shelters and rescues that do exist are overflowing, and compassion is scarce. It is a difficult life with few happy outcomes.

But Alma has beat the odds and found her way out. Now, after all she has overcome, we have just learned she is heartworm positive. Heartworm is a debilitating and deadly disease. It results in lung disease and heart failure, and causes irrevocable damage to other organs. It is a slow and painful disease. But most importantly, it is preventable.

Alma is facing down heartworm disease. We need your support to help this survivor put up a fight.
