The Lab Results Are In!

Update posted 4 years ago

The lab results are finally in and we now know that Ant's stone was caused by a chronic infection. This means she will be susceptible to these stones her entire life. But it's great that we caught it! And now that we know, her condition can be managed with a prescription diet. With ongoing care, Little Ant will be able to live her best life.

Ant came to us when the owner of the property she was living on called for help. She had several cats who needed help, but something was clearly wrong with this small kitten. A fraction of the size of her siblings, she was only 12 ounces when we scooped her up and took her straight to the vet. She was full of worms, but the bigger problem was she was urinating blood. She wasn't going to make it much longer if the cause wasn't found. X-rays revealed one of the largest bladder stones the vet had ever seen.

But only at 12 ounces, she was much too small and sick to undergo surgery to remove it. We thought she was a fighter, but this is when she needed to show all of the grit she could. The best course of action was to wait for her to get stronger and gain weight, making surgery an option for her tiny little body.

She's a mighty little kitten who has been fighting for all she's worth. Things were going well, she had gained a little weight and hit 1 pound. But then she crashed. She had to have emergency surgery to remove the stone that filled her entire bladder. It was stretching the walls of her bladder and it needed to come out before her body couldn't fight anymore.

Ant has likely never known a day without pain in her short life, but she keeps marching. She made it through surgery and the stone was removed. But she's not out of the woods. She continues to struggle and fight to hit milestones. Ant will continue to show us how strong she is and we need to help support her.

She will need continued care and support if she's going to make it through this fight.
