Support Critical Legal Services on the Border
In 2015-2016, the Attorney on the Move project visited 13 different project sites in the U.S.—and served hundreds of immigrant clients with 100% pro bono legal services. (You can read more about the first 18 months here: http://www.attorneyonthemove.com/list-of-blog-posts)
In 2017 after the election, I decided to move to Tucson, Arizona—60 miles away from Mexico—to be on the immigration front line during this uncertain and dangerous era.
Presently, I collaborate and receive asylum seeker referrals for full representation on a pro bono basis from local organizations here on the U.S./Mexico border.
Your gift will continue to support the following work—to be done on a 100% pro bono basis:
- Providing counsel to asylees/refugees who are in the Eloy and Florence Detention Centers in southern Arizona (full representation, including: bond hearings, master calendar hearings, individual/merits hearings to hear the full asylum claim, and appeals if needed/the client chooses to do so)
- Collaborating with greater Tucson nonprofits/activist organizations who are in need of an immigration attorney to handle asylum-based/rapid response claims and legal clinics
- Providing rapid response legal representation to communities/detention centers along the border on an as-needed basis
Your gift will also help support the expansion of the project, including:
- More op-eds elevating the voices of those who are detained and shining the light on other injustices within the immigration system and beyond—such as this piece I wrote featured in The Hill
- A weekly newsletter starting in early January featuring a curated list of immigration and other social-justice focused articles and commentary (and also fun .gifs :-)—as well as updates on what's going on here on the ground
- Working closely with other social justice lawyers and advocates to help them launch their own social ventures to address systemic inequities around immigration and other important issues
I am grateful to be in community with you all this week, month, and in the year ahead as we tackle 2018 together. It'd be an honor for myself and asylum seekers here in Arizona to receive your support—this project could not happen without you.
In solidarity,
Melanie Gleason, Esq.
PS: Please share with those in your community who are also passionate about fighting for immigrant rights—thank you!
