Avis Mitchell is fighting for her life. In 2004, she first began to notice issues with her lung function, and was eventually diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis. Her diagnosis came as a shock, as lung disease does not run in her family. Avis’s lung function has declined since her diagnosis and for the past ten years, she has relied on supplemental oxygen in order to breathe. Doctors say a lung transplant is critical for her survival.

During such a challenging time, Avis is thankful for the love and support of her family and friends. She is a single mother of three grown children and four grandchildren, and her illness causes them a lot of worry. Her grandchildren have never known her without a tube in her nose. Avis looks forward to receiving a transplant that will allow her to breathe freely and have a normal life again. She wants nothing more than to be able to take her grandchildren to the zoo, be able to be more active, and live her life to the fullest. But right now, she needs your help.

The average lung transplant costs more than $785,000, and that’s only the beginning. Even with health insurance, which will cover a portion of the cost of the transplant, she faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of her life, she will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are very expensive, and they’re as critical to her survival as the transplant itself
