Billy Courtney
Transplant Type: Liver
Billy Courtney is fighting for his life. Fifteen years ago, he began experiencing health issues related to undiagnosed fatty liver disease. The disease runs in Billy’s family, but his was also exasperated by exposure to toxic oil additives that were used in the engines of nuclear power submarines when he served in the US Navy. Now, Billy faces stage-4 non-alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver as a result. His condition leaves him tired and takes a toll on his quality of life. Doctors say a liver transplant is critical.
During this difficult time, Billy is grateful for the love and support of Kathy, his wife of 40 years. Billy and Kathy lost their only daughter to a drunk driver when she was only 18-years-old, and the loss was devastating to them. They have seven nieces and nephews and several great nieces and nephews they enjoy spending time with, as well as a number of family and friends who provide them with great support.
Billy looks forward to receiving a transplant that will save his life and allow him to feel like himself again. He used to enjoy camping, hunting, fishing, and working in the yard, but his declining health prevents him from doing those things now. He wants nothing more than to be healthy so he can spend more quality time with his wife and family, resume the activities he once enjoyed, go for walks without tiring, and travel to visit family. But right now he needs your help.
The average liver transplant costs approximately $740,000, and that’s only the beginning. Even with insurance, which will cover a portion of the transplant costs, he still faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of his life, he will need follow-up care and expensive anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are as critical to his survival as the transplant itself.
