Buckets of Rain has been growing hope and feeding lives since our founding in 2007. We support the rebuilding of Detroit by developing urban farms, turning blighted areas into agricultural oases that improve the food security of those living in the shadow of homelessness and hunger.
Since 2012 Buckets of Rain has been cleaning up blighted properties in Detroit/Highland Park and turning those properties into very productive vegetable gardens. The gardens provide multiple locations and opportunities for neighbors to reconnect via community gardening, volunteering, and neighborhood beautification. The vegetables grown in our gardens are provided free of charge to:
1. Seven homeless shelter kitchens of the Detroit Rescue Mission, Cass Community Social Services and others. 150,000 servings per year.
2. Residents in the neighborhoods where we work/grow via our partners the Wayne Metro Community Action Agency and our Friday Free Veggie give away. 10,000 servings per year.
3. Participants suffering from diet related health issues in our "Clinic to Farm to Patient" program with the SAY Clinic. 15,000 servings per year.
We supply free gardening materials such as plants, seed, raised beds, and compost to interested low income Detroiters who visit our gardens/farms.
Also, since Covid, we have expedited the delivery of thousands of pounds of Pandemic Relief supplies with our partners, the Highland Park Community Crisis Coalition.
