In 2019, the Hecker family started a new legacy: fostering. It's our goal to share life with as many children who come into our home as possible, and a big part of that life is experiencing the outdoors.  When we decided to foster, we made a list of all the things we wanted to give the kiddos we would get, and these things weren't physical things at all. Trips, quality time, and outdoor experiences were all at the top of the list because those are things that will become part of those children, something that can never be taken away from them.

Our children are one of the first generations to grow up almost entirely indoors, spending up to 27% of their time indoors and only 1% outdoors.  This problem effects adults as well, and our society is becoming increasingly detached from the natural world.  We do not understand how natural systems work or even where our food comes from.  How can we expect to inherit and address the vast issues facing our world today, if we don't have a personal connection with nature?

If you know me, you know I dedicate most of my personal and professional time working on furthering environmental education.  I believe EE is key to a successful future, one where children and adults alike have experiences such as hiking, growing a garden, fishing, and camping, which leads to making choices to recycle, drive fuel efficient vehicles, and compost.

I am asking you to give to environmental education so we can imagine a world where our children are continuously engaged in environmental education.  Help us to give today’s children those same experiences and help us to grow better stewards of the environment.  If you have a past experience that helped shape your love for and commitment to protecting our world, please pay it forward by supporting our mission.

The Kentucky Association for Environmental Education (KAEE) works to promote excellence in environmental education by providing support, resources and networking opportunities to Kentucky’s community of educators.
