Let's Raise $250 for Denver Food Rescue
I will be biking 15 miles over the week of August 22 and August 29th to raise money and awareness of food scarcity in Colorado.
With your donation, Denver Food Rescue partners with nonprofits, grocery stores, community organizations, and more to ensure Denver neighborhoods have access to fresh, healthy foods at no cost to families.
What is food waste and scarcity? What about in Denver?
- In the United States, approximately 40% of food goes uneaten each year; a contingent of DFR volunteers over 200 strong “rescues” excess, edible food from all types of food producers before it could be discarded
- In Denver, approximately 12% of the the population resides in food deserts or suffers from food insecurity; the No Cost Grocery Programs (NCGP) model provides fresh produce at no cost in locations that are accessible, convenient, and familiar to these affected residents.
Where do the proceeds from the event go?
Directly to DFR. Your funds will help us reach further in reclaiming fresh food access for ALL people (regardless of income, social status, gender, race, or ethnicity, etc.).
To give you an idea, here are some of the things you will be helping us achieve:
- Raising approximately $1,400 dollars in grocery savings for our No Cost Grocery Program Participants - we pay so they don't have to
- Rescuing 400 pounds of food from restaurants and grocery stores in Metro Denver
- Saving our planet from 578 pounds of CO2 emissions (food is delivered via bikes!)
Denver Food Rescue (DFR) is a nonprofit focused on improving health equity outcomes by increasing access to healthy foods in low-income areas in a community-focused and environmentally-conscious way.
DFR picks up food that would otherwise be discarded from grocery stores and delivers it by bicycle to hyper-local, resident-led, no-cost grocery, cooking, and nutrition programs. These programs help to fill in the gaps created by our food retail and food assistance systems while supporting culturally appropriate food education.
The Food Rescue Ride is Denver Food Rescue’s keystone fundraising event of the year and includes a casual, non-competitive 15 or 30-mile bike ride. Since we aren't gathering to ride the Cherry Creek Trail we are asking participants to bike a route that's accessible and convenient for them!
As an agency dedicated to equity, inclusion, and removing barriers we realize that some of our supporters, for various reasons, are unable to participate in a bike ride, but still want to participate. So this year Denver Food Rescue is adding a 5K (3.1 miles) to either walk or run!
