Thank you to everyone who participated in any and all forms during our Act for Compassion event! For those of you who participated in all aspects, please your completed journals to holly@bridgewayacademy.com by March 15th.
Everything that is done as part of Compassion’s holistic child development program benefits the child, his or her family, and ultimately the neighborhood and greater community. For example, a child receives an education and goes home and teaches their family what they’ve learned. Local businesses grow as they provide the students with school supplies, food, tutors, and uniforms. When students graduate, they have the skills needed to be hired for valuable jobs, or to start their own businesses. As funds become available, parents are taught skills or given micro-loans to start businesses or learn better techniques to do their jobs. Compassion International is helping these families break the cycle of poverty!
My story with Compassion International started 21 years ago, when I sponsored my first child, Veronica from Bolivia, through it. After Veronica, there was Asha Juma in Tanzania. She started with Compassion at age 7 and graduated at 21 with an accounting certificate! Then there was Sarah, Kasifa, and Rachel. Currently, I sponsor Juan A. in Bolivia and Sarah D. in Burkina Faso. Through letter writing, I’ve built relationships with each of these children. I receive report cards, progress reports, letters, and community updates so I know where to focus my encouragement for each child. I’ve even received letters from the child’s family a few times. You cry through those, trust me. It is an absolutely beautiful thing Compassion International has going.
I challenge you to take this month of learning about the Disaster Relief Fund and go one step further--sponsor a child. Go even further than that and choose an older child who has lost his or her original sponsor. The older kids need the encouragement more than anyone else as they may feel abandoned. Outside of Asha, the rest were teenagers when that connection was made. Write to them, build that beautiful relationship. Your life will never be the same!
While Compassion International's focus is on holistic child development to help release children from poverty, they also have special funds for various needs. In the past, we've raised money for water filters, for children with special needs, and for a location where human trafficking was at its worst. This year, we are raising money for the "Disaster Relief Fund." It provides not just emergency supplies and services in the hours to days after any disaster, but it also makes sure that short and long-term needs are provided and either the individual child or family or community as a whole is in better shape for any future event. Between now and March 6th, weekly emails will be sent out with stories and links to videos and blogs. Students wanting to earn 24 hours of community service need to read these, journal their thoughts (which they will turn in at the end,) make a donation, and participate in our Act Day on March 6th, 2020. Together, we can Act for Compassion!
