Why?
More than 61,000 children and youth under the age of 25 are currently grieving the death of at least one parent (in the six counties surrounding Cincinnati). Additionally, there are also thousands of us grieving the loss of a spouse, child, grandparent, aunt, uncle, friend, or neighbor. Many of us are grieving more than one person, especially this year with significant losses due to Covid19. This is our 'why'.
COJ is here! And ready to provide necessary and much needed grief support and education. We do however need the financial help of our friends and yours.
Grief, and the work we do is heavy. However, celebrating together the ones that we love, and whose memories we cherish, provides hope, strength and healing for us all.
Register and complete payment using the Donate button today.

Adults, Children and Teens all grieve differently. That's why COJ meets them where they are, on their journey, for as long as they need us.
What does adult grief look like and how does COJ help?

"Much like a butterfly, the struggles of children and teens in grief often go unnoticed" ~Maya Angelou
Children and teens with unaddressed grief are especially at risk for adverse behavioral and health struggles. When a child or teen experiences the death of a family member or close friend, it can rattle them to their core, leaving them shaken, their future uncertain. Often they feel disconnected from family and friends, as if they’re no longer ‘normal’, leaving them feeling set apart and misunderstood.
Last year, 49% of students who participated in COJ school-based support groups had experienced the death of a parent, and 58% had suffered the death of an immediate family member (parent or sibling).
In Ohio, it’s estimated that 1 in 11 children and teens will experience the death of a parent or sibling by their 18th birthday. In the counties that Companion on a Journey serves, currently 18,680 children and 41,940 young adults have suffered the death of a parent.

A little history….
A ‘good idea’ grew into COJ's Major Friend & Fundraising Event
In 2015, COJ Board Member Mike Munafo (pictured below on left, with mother and COJ Founder, Sheila Munafo-Kanoza and brother Tony Munafo) thought a golf outing could be just the way to invite friends and business associates to learn more about Companions on a Journey's mission, while also providing the opportunity to ask them to lend their financial support.
Little did he realize that seven years later this would become THE major fundraising event for COJ, providing the resources necessary to sustain our mission: providing ongoing support for the bereaved ~ one child, one adult, one family at a time, surrounding them with HOPE, STRENGTH, and HEALING as they create their new life balance.
