The youth of Philadelphia are some of the strongest and bravest in the nation. Every day it can be a challenge for our city’s children to find food, stay safe, and learn in a healthy and welcoming environment due to the numerous economic stresses that are put upon them and their families. 

For more than 100 years the Boys & Girls Clubs of Philadelphia has made it their mission to provide safe environments and experiences to help Philadelphia children grow and mature into responsible adults. Now more than ever, that mission is of critical importance as the nation faces an unprecedented time due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Over the past two months the Boys & Girls Clubs of Philadelphia has been working in the forefront with the City and the Philadelphia Housing Authority to ensure our kids and their families, who lack the resources necessary and are experiencing food insecurity, are fed in 5 of our locations during this critical time. Since starting the initiative, the clubs have served over 20,000 meals.

The Clubs have also developed virtual literacy programs, team meetings, program trainings and guidelines, and deep cleaned all facilities in preparation for the announcement to return to school and work activities. With the introduction of the brand new D.E.F.Y. (Digital Experiences For Youth) Club program, Club kids are gaining access to brand new virtual S.T.E.M., literacy, art, and fitness lessons daily.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Philadelphia understand that social distancing and closed Clubs do not mean closed hearts and minds. We must continue to support those that need it most to ensure they do not get left behind. As many stay home now to combat the spread of this coronavirus, many basic rights are seen as luxuries for those without. Even as the state dispenses laptops to their students, they are expected to overcome new struggles as they adapt to working on their fundamental skills like literacy and mathematics without the crucial support that comes with in-person instruction. Moreover, this challenge can seem like an impossible task for the many learning challenged students in our city.

Boys & Girls Clubs will continue to build interactive, online resources while simultaneously preparing to hit the ground running to give full support and resources to restore a sense of security, peace, and goodwill as many of our children are currently surrounded by stress, dysfunctional family circumstances, and a lack of education.
