Chance Theater's Speak Up Program
For over a decade, the Chance has been helping our community to find their voice and “speak up” about their lives and experiences. From at-risk teens, the homeless, people on the Autism Spectrum, to our veterans, we give them the opportunity to speak, so that we have the opportunity to listen. Greater understandings fosters greater empathy. Through these programs, we hope to contribute to a more connected, compassionate, and creative community.

Join us for an encore performance from all of our 2018 Speak Up Programs. Performers from our Teens Speak Up, Spectrum Speak Up and Veteran's Speak Up Program will all grace the stage together for this one- time only powerful performance. This event will include discussion from the artists and program directors.  This is the perfect opportunity for our community to support each other and find out more information about the Chance Theater's outreach programs!

Show Description:

This encore performance will include original scenes, monologues and personal stories from all three of our Speak Up Programs that graced our stage in 2018.

-The Teens  SpeakUp program meet for six-weeks over the summer to receive a dynamic theater education with the goal of cultivating the ability to honestly listen and respond on stage while making dynamic choices.  Student grew in their concentration and awareness, emotional freedom and connection, and most importantly, self-confidence. By sharing their personal stories, writing and creating their own original play, participants grew in confidence as performers and were part of a true ensemble.

-Spectrum Speak Up is crafted specifically for teens who have been diagnosed with high functioning Autism, Asperger’s or PDD-NOS. During the course of the six-week program, students  created new connections, learned the fundamentals of storytelling, self-expression and created and performed in an original play!

-Veterans Speak Up invited local veterans to participate in a six-week theater workshop that culminated in an emotional and empowering public performance at the Chance. Through the power of personal narratives, veterans were provided the opportunity to share their stories and express themselves promoting social healing and deepening our communities understanding of our local heroes.

Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors these programs are all offered free of charge to all participants!

"Our company believes that theater is a transformative tool that contributes to a more connected, compassionate, and creative community. Theater is like a gym for empathy; a place where we can go to build up the muscles of compassion, to practice listening, understanding and engaging with people that are not just like ourselves. ”
Oanh Nguyen, Chance’s Artistic Director

About the Chance-a-thon:
Chance Theater believes in supporting local artists, empowering young minds, and using the transformative power of live theater to create a more compassionate, connected and creative community.

The Chance is holding its 8th annual unique fundraising event, the Chance-a-thon,  on March 23 & 24.  It's going to be a fun weekend immersed in theater and featuring local artists sharing their talents and stories in support of the Chance. My personal goal is to raise $720, and you can help by donating as little as $15 or purchasing a ticket!

Give what you can (every dollar helps!) and thank you for playing your part in giving OC the "Chance" it deserves.
