I Did It!

Update posted 7 years ago

If you read my original post, you'll remember that there was a giant hill (aka a towering, fearsome mountain) that I had to walk up - I wasn't strong enough to ride the two-mile, nonstop climb.

In spite of not being able to train for 5 weeks, I rode the entire way! I conquered the beast!

Unfortunately, after making it over the hill, I was exhausted. It was a struggle making it to the end. Ironically, I was two minutes slower...yes, slower!....than the year I walked up the hill. I wondered why a couple dozen people paused as they passed me, asking if I was OK, or if they could send for help. I must have looked how I felt.

Soooo...there's room for improvement.

Next year, the goal is to post a personal best time on the bike.

Next up, Tri at the Grove on July 21st! Let the madness continue!

Seriously, thank you everyone . Thank you for supporting the Oregon Cancer Foundation and for your good wishes.

I am raising money for the Oregon Cancer Foundation by competing in the 2018 Pacific Crest Triathlon with Team Endure. If you know me, and you have not collapsed to the floor laughing at the thought of me competing in a triathlon, let me explain.

I lost my father to cancer. Supporting the Oregon Cancer Foundation, for me, is a way to honor him by supporting others, because the money stays in our community, helping our friends, neighbors, and loved ones. He would wonder about my choosing to do a triathlon, though.

I am competing in a triathlon, of all things, to walk the talk for my kids: Yes, children, it's important to live a healthy life, even when you're older than time itself.

Finally, I am training with Team Endure because I enjoy my teammates, whose support makes the impossible possible. I am not an athlete, yet I completed 3 triathlons in 2016, became overwhelmed with life in 2017 and took the year off, and I'm back at it for 2018. Thanks Team Endure!

Why "Dan's Ride to the Top?" In the 2016 Pacific Crest Triathlon, I walked the steepest portion of the 24.8 mile bike ride. I simply wasn't strong enough to ride that bit.  To add to my woe, I was so far behind the pack of riders that a sheriff's deputy offered me a lift to the top in her cruiser. She probably reasoned that it would be easier to give me a lift than to collect my body later.  In spite of walking the steepest part, I completed the triathlon (and no, I did not accept the ride). So this year, I'm riding all the way to the top!

Here's to you Dad.

Thank you for your graciousness and support! See you at the top!
