The Homeward Trails Animal Rescue Trails UP team is heading out into the field once again to save lives. This time the stakes are even higher. Why?
HT is heading to Danville, VA where the local humane society, the Danville Area Humane Society killed 71% of the dogs and 88% of the cats it took in last year. They killed 900 dogs and 1,753 cats last year. Stop and think about those numbers.
Those numbers are HEARTBREAKING & ASTOUNDING... and it does not have to be that way.
Homeward Trails Animal Rescue does not believe in shaming shelters and rescues who work hard to save lives and come up short. Times are tough and lifesaving is incredibly hard. BUT this shelter has chosen to kill animals over saving them year after year after year.
We have offered resource after resource after resource to help and they decline. Other organizations have offered resources and they decline. Elected officials have chosen not to do anything about the killing, allowing Danville to remain in the top highest animal killing communities in Virginia. And every year, more and more animals die needlessly. The number of animals NEEDLESSLY DYING is unacceptable.
A website publishes these abysmal statistics and even compares the Danville Area Humane Society to other shelters and jurisdictions with comparable demographics, indicating clearly that when a community WANTS to make lifesaving a priority it can! The excuses they use to kill are obsolete... as other communities just like them across Virginia are saving lives.

Please consider a donation to help us bring all the resources we can to this community as we prepare to spay/neuter/TNVR 80 cats at no cost to the community which will directly prevent cats from being born and likely ending up dead at the Danville Area Humane Society.
Know people in Danville? Have them step up and tell their elected officials that the killing MUST END NOW.
