David Bayerl
Transplant Type: Lung
Update: David received a transplant on March 3, 2020!
David Bayerl is fighting for his life. In 2016, he was hospitalized for sepsis. While there, he learned he had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency. David’s lung function has declined since then, and now he relies on supplemental oxygen to help him breathe. Doctors say a lung transplant is critical to his survival.
During such a challenging time, David is thankful for the love and support of his family and friends. He looks forward to receiving a transplant that will allow him breathe freely and be more active. He enjoys reading, watching sports, and spending time with his family and friends, but his illness sometimes limits his activities. He wants nothing more than to be healthy again and have a new lease on life. But right now, he needs your help.
The average lung transplant costs approximately $861,000, and that’s only the beginning. Even with health insurance, which will cover the cost of the transplant, he faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of his life, he will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are very expensive, and they’re as critical to his survival as the transplant itself.
David lives 250 miles from his transplant center and has to travel back and forth for appointments. When he receives his transplant, he will have to stay nearby while he recovers, incurring substantial expenses for travel, food, and lodging. David has continued to work as a city bus driver throughout his illness, but when his disease flares up he has to take time off. He will be off work throughout his recovery, further adding to his financial difficulties.
