'His life was gentle; and the elements

So mixed in him, that Nature might stand up

And say to all the world, this was a man!”~ Shakespeare

Leonardo Martins was many things: a first-class photographer, a talented filmmaker, a researcher and a humanitarian. His untimely death has left his colleagues and friends profoundly shaken. We are seeking ways to perpetuate all that was most beautiful and loving about this remarkable man. The Compathos Foundation announces the  establishment of the Leonardo Martins Fund for Filmmakers to help young, aspiring film artists bring their important messages of environmental justice to the world.

Can you support us in this endeavor? Your donation will help a new generation of filmmakers bring us the truth about the challenges we face with the environment, human rights, peace and the preservation of indigenous cultures. Their work will be a tribute to the memory of our beloved friend and colleague.

We miss you, Leonardo, but we will keep your beautiful vision alive.

THE XUKURU STORY

Leonardo was co-producer for The Xukuru Story, a project near and dear to his heart.

The Xukuru Story is a scenic visual narrative which immerses virtual travelers in a rustic Brazilian landscape as they learn how indigenous communities from around the world must fight against pervasive commercial interests for their land and livelihood. Digital installations include a vibrant music video of The Tore – a sacred cultural celebration – captured for the first time by Compathos.

Some of the students and young media professionals selected to work on this project were chosen from a student media contest hosted by Compathos Foundation’s Media Intern Program. The students traveled to Pernambuco, Brazil for a 14-day Media Expedition with Compathos' non-profit partner Global Citizens Network, an organization recommended by National Geographic, Budget Travel, The New York Times, NEED Magazine, and Oprah Magazine as one of the "Best Volunteer Vacations."

Rather than volunteer travelers helping to make community improvements such as building a school,  the Xukuru community requested to have their story told.  Having their story told ensures support from the international community when future threats re-occurred.  Their story needs to be told now more than ever.  This interactive documentary enables audiences to learn as well as participate in sharing the story and considering solutions.
