Delmi Ruiz-Lavadores

Transplant Type: Kidney

Update: Delmi received a kidney transplant on November 4, 2018!

Delmi Ruiz-Lavadores is awaiting a new lease on life. Ten years ago, she had an infection that caused her kidneys to fail. Doctors couldn’t determine the cause, and there was no family history of kidney disease. Delmi was shocked by her diagnosis and has handled it the best she is able. For the past decade, she’s had to undergo dialysis three days each week for four hours at a time. The dialysis keeps her alive, but it takes a toll on her quality of life and leaves her exhausted. Doctors now say that a kidney transplant is critical to her survival, and she was added to the transplant waiting list in October.

During this difficult time, Delmi is grateful for the love and support of her partner, Omar, and her seven children, who range in age from 4-19. She looks forward to receiving a transplant that will free her from dialysis and allow her to live her life without feeling so tired. She wants nothing more than to have her health restored so she can care for her children the way she wants to, and be an active mother again. But right now, she needs your help.

The average kidney transplant costs more than $442,000. And that’s only the beginning. Even with insurance, which will cover a portion of the transplant costs, Delmi still faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of her life, she will need follow-up care and anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are very expensive, and they’re as critical to her survival as the transplant itself.
