Placenta accreta is a pregnancy condition in which the placenta attaches too deeply into the wall of the uterus. The risk for developing accreta increases with each c-section or uterine surgery. Placenta accreta puts the mother at risk of severe blood loss and other complications. The rates of maternal death, transfusion, prolonged hospital stay and hysterectomy are all increased for women with accreta.
I am the 1 in 272. In 2019, after having my son, I hemorrhaged and needed 77 units of blood in transfusions to save my life. As a result, I had an emergency hysterectomy and can no longer carry a child. I was only 27 years old, and this was my first and only pregnancy. My placenta accreta was undiagnosed, as so many cases are. Though my heart is broken by what I have been through, I am so incredibly grateful to the doctors that were able to save my life so that I can be there to watch my son grow up. Now, I will walk (and maybe even run!) to raise awareness and money to help research treatment and prevention of this horrible condition, in hopes that women in the future may have access to healthcare to keep them safe during pregnancy and prevent placenta accreta.
