Transplant Type: Kidney
What if you were living on borrowed time?
Domitila Jarquin Avendano is awaiting a new lease on life. She has battled type II diabetes for more than 20 years. She has always been able to manage her diabetes through diet and exercise until about a year ago, when she began noticing swelling throughout her body. After several tests, doctors confirmed the cause was her kidneys, and within six months, she had developed renal failure. Now doctors say a kidney transplant is critical to her survival. , while awaiting her transplant, Domitila endures regular dialysis treatments. Dialysis leaves her exhausted and takes a toll on her quality of life.
This has been a difficult time for Domitila, as she’s not able to be as active as she once was. She is extremely grateful for the love and support of her seven children, sixteen grandchildren, and great-grandchild, who have been by her side every step of the way. Before her health began to worsen, Domitila enjoyed cooking, going on walks, and spending time with her family, but these days, her activities are extremely limited. She looks forward to the transplant that will allow her to live life with as few limitations as possible, and to travel and spend many more years with her loved ones, but right now, she needs your help.
Unfortunately, Domitila’s hope for a new life comes at a very high price.
The average kidney transplant costs approximately $442,000. And, that’s only the beginning. Even with insurance, she is responsible for all of the transplant costs, and she faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of her life, she will need follow-up care and anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are very expensive, and they’re as critical to her survival as the transplant itself. Due to her deteriorating health, Domitila is no longer able to work, adding to the financial strain.
You can help by making a tax-deductible donation to the National Foundation for Transplants in honor of Domitila.
If you'd prefer to send your gift by mail, please send it to the NFT Oregon Transplant Fund, 3249 W. Sarazen’s Circle, Suite 100, Memphis, TN 38125. Please be sure to write "in honor of Domitila Jarquin Avendano” in the memo line.
