Doug Hayes
Transplant Type: Multi-Visceral (Liver, Pancreas, Stomach, Large Intestine, and Small Bowel)
When Doug was just 5 years old he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He was a brave, strong little boy and he beat the cancer. The radiation that cured his cancer caused scarring and a condition known as portal hypertension; by the time Doug was 12 years old he had begun suffering from GI bleeds. His GI bleeds have become continuous and doctors now say a multivisceral transplant is necessary. Doug will need a new stomach, liver, pancreas, large intestine, and small bowel. His MELD score is 35 of 40. With that score, his transplant could be any day.
Doug and his wife, Corinne, have 4 children (ages 13, 11, 6, and 5). Doug’s illness has required many hospitalizations, requiring him to spend weeks away from his family. It has also impacted his ability to financially provide for them. With close to 20 of these transplants done nationally every year, the transplant journey is a difficult one. Doug looks forward to his transplant and to just living his life, being a dad, raising his kids with his wife, and enjoying what every day brings!
The average multi-visceral transplant costs more than $2 million. And that’s only the beginning. Even with health insurance, which will cover the cost of the transplant, he faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of his life, he will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are very expensive, and they’re as critical to his survival as the transplant itself.
When Doug has his transplant, his family will have to relocate to be closer to his transplant center during his recovery. They will be more than 250 miles from home, away from friends and extended family, for up to a year while Doug recovers. Doug will be receiving five new organs, and the recovery will be lengthy.
