Doyle Kornegay

Transplant Type: Kidney

What if you were living on borrowed time?

Doyle Kornegay is awaiting a new lease on life. He has battle IgA nephropathy for several years. Unfortunately, in October 2020, it was found that his condition was declining. Now doctors say a kidney transplant is necessary.

During such a challenging time, Doyle is thankful to be surrounded by a strong support system of family and friends. His beautiful wife, Shirley, has been by his side every step of the way. Their wonderful children, family and friends have provided much needed love and encouragement. While it’s been very hard for Doyle and Shirley, these circumstances have also brought them closer together, strengthened their trust in each other, and given them perspective on what matters most in life. Before his health began to worsen, Doyle enjoyed being outside, working in his yard, camping, and taking family vacations, but these days, his activities are quite limited. Doyle looks forward to the transplant that will allow him to live life with as few limitations as possible, and to spend many more years with the love of his life, Shirley, but right now, he needs your help.

Unfortunately, Doyle’s hope for a new life comes at a very high price.

The average kidney transplant costs approximately $442,000. And that’s only the beginning. Even with health insurance, which will cover the cost of the transplant, he faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of his life, he will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are very expensive, and they’re as critical to his survival as the transplant itself.

Doyle lives more than 215 miles from the transplant center, and he incurs substantial expenses each time he visits for evaluations and doctors’ appointments. When he receives his transplant, Doyle and Shirley will need to stay near the hospital, during recovery, adding to the financial strain.

You can help by making a tax-deductible donation to the National Foundation for Transplants in honor of Doyle.

If you'd prefer to send your gift by mail, please send it to the NFT North Carolina Transplant Fund, 3249 W. Sarazen’s Circle, Suite 100, Memphis, TN 38125. Please be sure to write "in honor of Doyle Kornegay” in the memo line.

Thank you for your generosity!
