My name is Ramona. I am a person in long-term recovery. I have been in recovery for thirteen years. There was a time when I had Lost everything, due to my own poor life choices. Recovery has afforded me a life I would have never thought possible. Graduating, at the top of my class, I earned an associates degree, in 2010. I became a published writer that same year. I have done food styling for television and magazines, and today I am an after school teacher. I am present in the lives of my family. I am a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a sister, a daughter, and a good friend. I am an active member in my church, and a productive member of society who has a servant’s heart. I do extensive volunteer work in the community and strive to help others, who are seeking the freedom I have found.
I did not , and could not , have achieved all these things on my own; others, peers in recovery, came alongside me, to guide and support me. Last year, in September, I earned a C.A.R.E.S. certification , through The Georgia Council on Substance Abuse. CARES stands for Certified Addiction Recovery Empowerment Specialists. The mission of the Georgia CARES is to promote long-term recovery from substance use disorders by providing experienced peer support and advocating for self-directed care. This program opened my eyes to the fact that, there are many different pathways to recovery. There is no single right way to find recovery. People find recovery, in many different ways. Peer specialists help guide each individual In finding their own way.
The GCSA has had a profound impact on my life and the lives of my friends and family. It Is an organization very close to my heart, as I have attained very close friends and mentors through this program; people who know they can only keep what they have, by giving it away. The work they do has dramatically changed my life and the lives of some of my family members.
I am living proof that recovery is possible, and would greatly appreciate it, if you would be willing to support the GCSA, in their efforts to save and change lives.
