INTRODUCTION AND WHO WE ARE:
Imagine a world without a single book to pick up and enjoy at any given moment. This means you would never get to experience the gift of reading! For many kids worldwide, this is true.
We are 5th graders at Prospect Elementary School, and we want kids around the world to have access to all kinds of books! We are collecting new and gently used books and money for Reader to Reader, Inc., a nonprofit organization that donates books to schools and communities so all kids can have access to reading. Please join us in helping children in the poorest communities, including inner-city schools, Native American Reservations, and poor rural towns around the country get books to read!
WHAT IS BAN THIS BOOK, AND HOW DID IT INSPIRE US?
We were inspired to start our own Bucks for Books fundraiser by our grade level read aloud, Ban This Book by Alan Gratz. In this story, kids did not have access to certain books, and we didn’t think that was fair at all! Our 5th grade service learning project will help raise money to give books to kids without access to them. Please join us in using what we have to give books to kids in need.
WHAT IS SERVICE LEARNING AND WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO US?
Service learning combines learning and community service. It allows children to make a positive impact on others based on ideas learned in the classroom. We want to give back because books are such a big part of our lives, and we couldn’t imagine life without books!
