Help Support the ACPS Family Engagement Efforts!

This year for Giving Tuesday, the Mount Vernon Community School PTA is encouraging our families to support ACPS family engagement efforts. 

Did you know that almost 1 out of every 3 students enrolled in Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) is an English language learner? And 121 native languages are spoken by Alexandria families? We are proud of this rich multicultural diversity that can transform our school communities into vibrant learning spaces. However, to create inclusive and welcoming connections, the essential building blocks of communication must first be provided to families in their native language. And due to the pandemic and the virtual world we have been forced to live in, family engagement is even more challenging and critical.

This is why the ACPS VirtualPlus+ Helpline is so important.

 ACPS created the Helpline at the start of the Virtual+ school year as a resource for questions related to technology, childcare options, food access and social, emotional or academic support. Planned to be operational for just the first six weeks of the school year, the Helpline continues to receive 400-500 calls/week from families.  Since the Helpline was created to meet an urgent need during the COVID-19 pandemic, it not only is an unbudgeted cost for ACPS at a minimum of $6,000/month, but a critical family equity tool. Additionally, ACPS has received a record number of simultaneous interpretation and requests for documents and videos to be translated into our community’s three non-English major languages, Spanish, Amharic & Arabic. 

This week, many of us will pause in gratitude for our blessings during these difficult times. On December 1 (or before), please keep the spirit of gratitude alive by making a generous donation to the Alexandria PTA Council’s Giving Tuesday campaign to support the continuation of the ACPS Helpline and also provide an extra financial cushion for ACPS' translation/interpretation budget.

¿Sabía que casi 1 de cada 3 alumnos inscritos en las Escuelas Públicas de la Ciudad de Alexandria (ACPS) es un estudiante que aprende el idioma inglés? ¿Y que nuestras familias de Alexandria hablan 121 idiomas diferentes? Estamos orgullosos de esta rica diversidad multicultural que puede transformar nuestras comunidades escolares en espacios de aprendizaje vibrantes. Sin embargo, para crear conexiones inclusivas y acogedoras, primero se deben proporcionar a las familias los componentes básicos de la comunicación en su lengua materna. Y debido a la pandemia y el mundo virtual en el que nos hemos visto obligados a vivir, la participación familiar es aún más desafiante y crítica. 

Aquí es donde entra en juego la Línea de Ayuda VirtualPlus+ de ACPS. 

ACPS creó la Línea de Ayuda al comienzo del año escolar de Virtual+ como un recurso para preguntas relacionadas con la tecnología, las opciones de cuidado infantil, el acceso a alimentos y el apoyo social, emocional o académico. La Línea de Ayuda, que se prevé que esté operativa solo durante las primeras seis semanas del año escolar, sigue recibiendo entre 400 y 500 llamadas por semana de las familias.  Dado que la Línea de Ayuda se creó para satisfacer una necesidad urgente durante la pandemia de COVID-19, no solo es un costo no presupuestado para ACPS de un mínimo de $6.000 al mes, sino una herramienta fundamental de equidad familiar. Además, ACPS ha recibido un número récord de solicitudes de interpretación simultánea y de traducción de documentos y videos a los tres idiomas principales de nuestra comunidad distintos al inglés: español, amárico y árabe

Esta semana, muchos de nosotros haremos una pausa de agradecimiento por nuestras bendiciones durante estos tiempos difíciles. El 1° de diciembre (o antes), mantenga vivo el espíritu de gratitud haciendo una generosa donación a la campaña Martes de Donaciones del Consejo de las PTA de Alexandria, para apoyar la Línea de Ayuda de ACPS y proporcionar un colchón financiero adicional para su presupuesto de traducción e interpretación.
