Update #2

Update posted 2 years ago
Hello Everyone!

Our team at Upcycled appreciates your support and patience as we work with BGE to have electrical installed at the barn. Since our last update we have submitted a variance request to BGE to avoid a paved road on the property by installing a new electrical pole just over the road. That has verbally been accepted, and now we are waiting for the final documentation and the final cost for BGE's portion of the work, which was originally quoted at $2500. We also have some GREAT NEWS, one of our board members is working with a local construction company to donate conduit and the labor for the trenching!

Now, there is one slight issue...as we were walking the site last week to prepare for the trenching, a farm historian filled us in on some unfortunate news. The area that we are trenching has a septic tank and drainage field that is unmarked and not located on any site plans in the general vicinity. As you could imagine this is not an ideal situation, but one we can definitely manage. We are working with Miss Utility, the construction company, and the property owner to find a way to resolve this issue. Over the next week or so we are hoping to learn more about their locations and proceed with trenching, worst case we may need to submit a new design to avoid the area.

In the meantime, we keep on-going business as usual! We used funding that was allocated for equipment to purchase a generator in order to continue the set-up at the barn, and keep our schedule for the summer internship program. We have the workshop where we build benches and tables set-up, and a few machines have been brought over for hands on learning. Once have BGE scheduled for the electrical installation, we will be able to have smooth transition to working at the barn as the new Upcycled facility!

The donations raised from this fundraiser have not been used, and will be held until we receive final costs from BGE, and if there are any costs associated with the trenching. At this time there is no need to continue donating to this fundraiser, as we wait for final costs. It is our hope the $3,746 that has been raised will cover the BGE installation, and the trenching will kindly be covered by the construction company. If there are any additional funds remaining from this fundraiser they will be used towards the lease and utility costs for the barn. Once we receive more information we will be in touch. Thank you again for your support and patience!

P.S. Please join us for our community cleanup/kickball game on June 24th at 10am at Lake Elkhorn Middle School.

Hello Our Community- We need your help NOW as we complete the first ever interactive recycling facility in Maryland!!!

For those who do not know, we have beautiful property on a farm in Clarksville, MD with a  2,400 sq ft barn. The barn started out as a dream for our eventual facility, but in reality it was filled with three feet of hay across the whole space. With help from volunteers Freddie and Orlando cleared most of that space in the first few years of Upcycled and was using it as the collection and sorting facility for collected plastic. Over the past few months the Upcycled team has been building out our collection facility to the location for our operations and become a functional recycling facility.

The inside of the barn has a decked section that is used for building the structures from the lumber, a sorting area for plastic with designated baskets for the plastic types that are used in our lumber, and a weighing station for collected plastic. On the outside is a modular storage unit that has been converted into a workshop with features that include an electrical panel, lighting, and windows and doors. This space will house the machinery that is used for the upcycling process.

Once the construction of the facility is complete, the internship will be open for high school students, tours for the community, and even educational classes to learn how to UPCYCLE! We were so close to finishing...and then...we get a call...We are being charged $2500 for installing the electricity hook-up and on top of that we are required to dig a 235 ft long - 2 ft deep trench and install 4 inch conduit which is going to cost at least an additional $5000! To make it a little sweeter we cannot get on the schedule to have electric installed until this is complete and inspected, then it is a 7-8 week wait to have the work completed.

This is a very time sensitive project and we cannot fall much more behind on our schedule. We will need to use a line of credit to make these purchases, but currently our organization does not have the funding to pay off any credit that is taken out. It is our hope that, YOU, OUR COMMUNITY, can help raise donations to pay-off the funds used to complete the project.

Please help us bring the first ever interactive recycling center in Maryland! Any amount helps!
