Ellen Is Marching for Human Rights

It’s a long-haul struggle to win universal healthcare, and a more just and equitable society for all. And I think that it will only happen when we build in a way that both builds leadership for the long haul and creates within our movement the kind of world we want to live in. 

I am fortunate to have found the Vermont Workers’ Center, an organization where we treat the struggle as a school, an opportunity to learn from each other, from our experiences, and from the history of liberation movements about how we can organize in a way that transforms lives and builds power. We’re an organization that values political education and the arts —not as add-ons, but as integral to organizing for change. I love that I get to learn with my VWC comrades and with grassroots organizers from around the country through connections that the VWC has with movements such as the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival.

This year we are continuing our fight to preserve and expand Medicaid. Because Medicaid is a program for poor folks, it’s under particular attack nationally, and we want to be sure that Vermont does not implement new barriers or reduce benefits and services. At the same time we know that Medicaid, while a lifeline for many, is still inadequate in many ways and that there are members of our communities who are unjustly excluded. That’s why we remain steadfast in our commitment to universal publicly funded healthcare for all of us.

We are a low-staff organization. Most of our work is driven by our members, which is how it should be. However, we still need money to cover our basic expenses—which is where you come in!
