We are sad to inform everyone that another one of our lesson horses, Tito, has been diagnosed with EPM.
EPM stands for Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis. It is a parasite which is transmitted by the horse coming into contact with contaminated feces, usually from an opossum. Once ingested, the sporocysts migrate from the intestinal tract into the bloodstream and cross the blood/brain barrier. There they begin to attack the horse's central nervous system. The onset of the disease may be slow or sudden. If left undiagnosed and untreated, EPM can cause devastating and lasting neurological damage, and can eventually take a horse's life. You can read more about the disease here.
We are fundraising to help in paying to treat Tito. It will cost $800. We thank you in advance for contributing - anything helps.
