The Crisis Center provides domestic violence victims emergency shelter, therapy, legal support and advocacy.  We are seeking funds to develop a shelter for pets of victims in our emergency shelter including support for building the facility, kennels, and veterinary care for animals who have been victims of domestic abuse, trauma and neglect.

When victims seek safety, they’re not only faced with the challenge of finding shelter for themselves, but also for their pets and children. Many must decide to leave their pets behind or remain in the abusive relationship. Nearly 50% delay leaving for fear of harm to their animals. More than half have reported leaving their pets, where they may face torture or even death. (Source: RedRover)

Support from the TANK will allow us to keep human victims and their pets together in a safe space, for both to heal from the trauma and abuse they’ve experienced.

The Crisis Center serves approximately 65 clients in our emergency shelter program annually, with an estimated 75% of these owning pets who have been impacted by abuse as well.   By building a structure that can hold up to seven (7) dogs and cats at any giving time, with an average length of stay of 21 days, we estimate that will be able to impact at least 50 clients annually by providing safe shelter to their pet while they are at the Crisis Center’s emergency shelter.

Without this service, many pet owners impacted by domestic violence may not seek emergency shelter in fear of leaving their pet behind with their abuser or not having an alternative safe space for the pet to go.

As one client stated: “We were considered “high lethality victims”, my dog and me, having been beaten and starved, nearly to death.  I wouldn’t be alive if I didn’t have my dog.  At one point, he laid on top of me and took many of the blows in order to protect me from our shared abuser.  Without the Crisis Center, neither of us would be alive today.”
