In the midst of this unprecedented public health and economic crisis, the Flatbush Tenant Coalition has been both a life-line and a continued source of collective power for thousands of families in central Brooklyn, across the city, and throughout the state.  In the last 10 months, as one of the lead organizations in Right to Counsel NYC Coalition and together with tenant groups from across the city and state, we:

  • won a historic, statewide eviction moratorium through at least May 1st, ensuring that hundreds of thousands of families will not become homeless during this pandemic
  • launched the largest rent strike in 100 years; and
  • forced the city to immediately recognize the Right to Counsel for ALL tenants in eviction courts

More locally, during this pandemic our amazing Flatbush Tenant Coalition leaders and team continued our organizing work both in person (outdoors & socially distanced, of course) and virtually via Zoom and conference calls.  We expanded our language justice initiative, holding ALL of our campaign meetings in English, Spanish, and Haitian Creole.  Together, we:

  • won a years-long battle with one of NYC's worst landlords, allowing 18 families to return to their newly renovated apartments after a fire forced them out of their homes
  • launched our Flatbush Eviction Defense Committee, where tenants at most immediate risk of eviction come together to support one another, connect to legal and other resources, and strategize how to use existing tools (like rent strikes for repairs and rent-impairing housing code violations) to stop or slow down evictions
  • continued to engage community youth in our fight for social justice, supporting our Youth Leadership Group to develop a 'zine about community and mutual aid during this crisis (to be released shortly!)
  • grew our base to 100 tenant associations, supporting tenants across central Brooklyn to join together in their buildings to fight for repairs and stop evictions
  • educated more than 7,000 tenants on their rights and available resources during the pandemic
  • developed 45 new tenant leaders, growing our network to more than 500 tenant leaders who are the base of power for our movement, and a source of  information, support, and connection for thousands of families and individuals in their buildings and across our neighborhoods
  • connected more than 3,000 community members to mutual aid, legal, immigration, and other services and resources.

We are ready for the hard road ahead of us in 2021!  Over the last 10 years, we’ve created a vast community of tenant associations in our neighborhoods, with a network of tenant leaders who are leading the fight for a UNIVERSAL eviction moratorium and REAL rent relief for families across the state.  We need your generous support to make it happen!!
