August is Black Philanthropy Month, which celebrates and amplifies Black giving, encourages investment in Black-led nonprofit organizations and shines a light on the importance of continued investment in Black philanthropic leadership and funding equity. There are huge disparities when it comes to revenues and unrestricted assets between white-led and Black-led organizations. A recent survey by the Nonprofit Finance Fund found more white-led nonprofits receive unrestricted funds as compared to Black-led organizations. White-led nonprofits were also more likely to receive corporate donations — 71% vs 58% for Black-led nonprofits -- have revenue from sales and funding from the federal government and investment income. Black Philanthropy Month highlights these disparities and promotes financial giving for Black-led and Black-benefitting nonprofits. Give 8/28 builds on the momentum created by Black Philanthropy Month with days of giving for Black nonprofits.
IGNITING LIFELONG PASSION FOR STEM
Girls 4 Science is the only free, year-round, non-competitive out-of-school STEM program for girls in the Chicagoland area. Girls 4 Science fulfills its mission through its free Saturday STEM Academy, a six-week, year-round program for girls age 10-18 years, primarily from under-resourced areas of Chicago and its surrounding suburbs. The program model is based on evidence that science exposure and increased science literacy will equip young girls with the knowledge and confidence needed to pursue study in the sciences and careers in STEM.
Girls 4 Science is into its second decade and continues to expand and enhance its program. We intend to keep the program free and without barriers for all girls who want to attend in our endeavor to create a sustainable pipeline for women of color in STEM careers.
