Waiting on radiologist
Little Gabby Gray has had quite the ordeal! She went to the vet on Saturday, where she had another round of x-rays. (They wanted to get a better look at what might be going on.) Unfortunately, we still aren't exactly sure what's causing her distress, but we're narrowing it down!
Kittens have lots of growing left to do, which means they have growth plates in their legs! While these plates are essential for growing, they make it difficult for us to see exactly what's going on. It's possible that she has a fracture near the growth plate. (Oof.) However, she may be also be suffering from luxating patella -- where her knee cap actually dislocates and works itself back into position, over and over. (Ouch!) Or, she might have torn or strained the ligaments around her knee, responsible for keeping the knee joint tight and everything in place. (Yikes!)
For now, she is on medications to manage her pain and strict cage rest. As a kitten, it's possible that her body's natural growth processes will aid in the healing process. But to be sure, we've sent her x-rays on to a radiologist who can give us their official diagnostic reading. It may be that we'll need to consult with a surgeon to get her back on her feet.
Either way, she will definitely need to go back to the vet this week. Maybe then we will have the answers we need to get a clear treatment plan in place.
We are truly grateful to Dr. Brian Neumann and the team at Caring Hands Animal Hospital for their outstanding and compassionate care of Gabby Gray!
You know what they say...it's all fun and games, until a kitten's on cage rest! This playful kitten got a little too rowdy with her sibling, and accidentally broke her ankle. Little Gabby Gray was wrestling with her sibling on the couch (she'll tell you she was winning, too!) when she slid off and landed in just the wrong way. Ouch!
Gabby Gray has to take it extremely easy while she heals. She is on cage rest and has been prescribed pain medication. She had a series of x-rays and will be starting treatments this week. Her vet wants to try using splints to stabilize her leg and help her heal more naturally. If things don't go the way we hope, little Gabby Gray may need surgery.
What's more? Little Gabby Gray has ringworm! We had already started treating her for this fungal infection, which means she has a whole lot of healing to do.
Whatever obstacles lie ahead, we know that we'll be there to provide whatever she need. Gabby Gray has at least six weeks of treatments ahead of her--maybe more, depending on her recovery--and she's counting on us to get her through!
