Gary Peterson
Transplant Type: Double Lung
Gary Peterson is awaiting a new lease on life. In 2007, he was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and emphysema. His lung function has decreased over time, and he now requires the assistance of supplemental oxygen in order to breathe. Doctors say a double-lung transplant is critical to his survival.
During this difficult time, Gary is thankful for the love and support of his wife of 40 years, Jamie, and their family and friends. Gary and Jamie have four children and ten grandchildren, and his illness prevents him from being the active husband, father, and grandfather he longs to be. His family worries a lot about his health. Gary looks forward to receiving a transplant that will save his life and allow him to breathe freely without supplemental oxygen. He enjoys fishing, golfing, and bowling with his family, but his health now limits his activities. Gary wants nothing more than to be healthy so he can enjoy life with his family, go on walks with his wife, and watch his grandchildren grow up. But right now, he needs your help.
The average double-lung transplant costs more than $1 million, and that’s only the beginning. Even with health insurance, which will cover a portion of the transplant costs, Gary faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of his life, he will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are very expensive, and they’re as critical to his survival as the transplant itself. Gary’s declining health forced him to stop working, further adding to his financial burdens.
