Immigrants detained at Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, Georgia cannot protect themselves from coronavirus. There is no way to socially distance, and they have only sporadic access to masks and hand sanitizer. They have no hot water. If they complain that they feel sick, they risk being thrown in solitary confinement, which is an internationally recognized form of torture.
We are working with our advocacy partners to free everyone in detention. We are supporting people in detention by putting money on their phone accounts so they can call and video-conference loved ones; putting money on their commissary accounts so they can purchase hand sanitizer, food, soap and other supplies; and supporting their families by putting them up in hotel rooms when they are in town for court hearings and helping them work out transportation logistics when their loved one is released. We also send Solidarity Care Packages to family members.
Thank you for your support of people detained at Stewart and their loved ones! Immigrant detention works hard to steal their humanity. With their gift, you give a little of that humanity back.
