George Roberge

Transplant Type: Double Lung

George Roberge has a new lease on life. In 2013, he was diagnosed with end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). By 2016, his lung function had decreased dramatically and he was forced to stop working. Doctors said a double-lung transplant was critical to his survival. Thankfully, George received a double-lung transplant on September 28, 2019!

During such a difficult time, George is thankful for the love and support of his wife of 41 years, Diane, and their family and friends. George and Diane have two daughters and six grandsons, and his illness has prevented him from being the active husband, father, and grandfather he longs to be. He looks forward to fully recovering from his transplant so he can resume some of the activities he enjoys, like vacationing in Florida, spending time outdoors, and attending family events. More than anything, he’s looking forward to being healthy so he can take his wife out to dinner and spend more quality time with his daughters and grandsons. He also hopes to return to work, although he will no longer be able to do construction work. George is so thankful for his donor and their family for giving him a second chance at life.

The average double-lung transplant costs more than $1 million, and that’s only the beginning. Even with health insurance, which covered a portion of the transplant costs, he faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of his life, he needs follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are very expensive, and they’re as critical to his survival as the transplant itself.

George lives 50 miles from his transplant center, and traveling back and forth for appointments is expensive. He had to stay nearby during his recovery, incurring substantial expenses for travel, food, and lodging. His illness forced him to stop working in 2016, further adding to his financial burdens.

You can help by making a tax-deductible donation to NFT in honor of George. If you'd prefer to send your gift by mail, please send it to National Foundation for Transplants, 3249 W. Sarazen’s Circle, Suite 100, Memphis, TN 38125. Please be sure to write "in honor of George Roberge” on the memo line.

Thank you for your generosity!
