Gerald Mitchell

Transplant Type: Kidney

Gerald Mitchell is awaiting a new lease on life. Seven years ago, he was a hard working husband and father who was rarely sick. One night, he suffered a stroke, which left him disabled and caused him to have to learn how to walk, talk, and dress himself again. The stroke also caused his kidneys to fail, and he was placed on dialysis. He has been on dialysis for the past two years, which leaves him tired and takes a toll on his quality of life. Doctors say a kidney transplant is critical.

During this difficult time, Gerald is thankful for the love and support of his wife, Trish, and their family and friends. Gerald has a daughter who will graduate from high school this year, and his health causes her a lot of worry. He looks forward to receiving a transplant that will free him from dialysis and allow him to be the active husband and father he longs to be. Gerald used to enjoy building things and riding dirt bikes, but his health prevents him from doing those things now. He wants nothing more than to be healthy so he can have more energy, enjoy life with his family, and watch his daughter graduate, go to college, and get married. But right now, he needs your help.

The average kidney transplant costs more than $414,000, and that’s only the beginning. Even with insurance, which will cover a portion of the transplant costs, Gerald still faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of his life, he will need follow-up care and anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are very expensive, and they’re as critical to his survival as the transplant itself.

Gerald lives nearly 100 miles from his transplant center and has to travel back and forth for appointments. When he receives his transplant, he will have to stay nearby while he recovers, incurring substantial expenses for travel, food, and lodging. Gerald’s health prevents him from working, further adding to his financial burdens.

You can help by making a tax-deductible donation to NFT in honor of Gerald. If you'd prefer to send your gift by mail, please send it to the NFT Louisiana Transplant Fund, 3249 W. Sarazens Circle, Suite 100, Memphis, TN 38125. Please be sure to write "in honor of Gerald Mitchell” on the memo line.
