More than 500 anti-LGBTQ bills have been introduced so far across the U.S. this year, resulting in increased violence and intimidation, especially towards transgender and gender non-binary youth. To combat the escalating lies and hate, there is an urgent need to increase access to simple truths about LGBTQ people and our history.
The GLBT Historical Society helps LGBTQ communities by making the reality of our history known. We operate the first museum of LGBTQ history and culture in the U.S., sharing vital information to combat anti-LGBTQ rhetoric, ranging from indigenous communities pre-European colonization to people pushing for equality today.
We support the creation of thousands of books, podcasts, films, TV series, etc. that promote increased understanding and appreciation of LGBTQ people and our history. We hold one of the largest collections of LGBTQ historic materials ever assembled, from speeches written by the first openly gay U.S. political candidate and the original rainbow flag, to decades of journals written by early transgender organizers and photo and video documentation stretching back 100+ years. Our archives receive 400+ visitors per year, including academic researchers, educators, artists, filmmakers, writers, and others who go on to share that knowledge with global audiences.
We have seen an increased demand for knowledge of our vast queer past, especially from folks in states that are working to remove our community and our culture from public view. We need your support to meet this demand and ensure all people have access to their history!
Thanks to an anonymous donor, all contributions made during June are doubled – up to $10,000!
