Spirit Litter Update - PanLeuk Survivors!

Update posted 2 years ago

Update 1 - Take Me Home Pet Rescue wants to thanks each of you for your generous donation to help the Spirit litter. This is the litter that was dealing with Panleukopenia and it was a tough and long fight. Mom, Honey, and two of the kittens (Stella and Shiner) have been declared cured and are totally out of the woods and enjoying life in a loving foster home. We are so appreciative that you cared and donated to help raise funds to cover the huge expenses. Thanks, thanks, thanks. We will remember the kittens who did not survive and celebrate daily the survival of these three beautiful cats.

Meet the Spirit Litter Sick with Feline Panleuk

There were seven in this family when they first came to the rescue and now there are four. Ravaged by Feline Panleukopenia (FP), the survivors (Honey, Stella, Bailey and Shiner) continue to fight with supportive care and foster mom love since there is no cure for this potentially deadly virus.

Spirit Litter Backstory and Current Status

They were found as strays in McKinney and taken to the local shelter when the kittens were about three weeks old. TMHPR took them into our program and moved them to a foster home. A few days after they were moved all were vomiting and had diarrhea. They were rushed to the ER and were positive for FP. Mom and babies were admitted. Three of the kittens, Hops, Rosie and Foster, have passed away, unable to survive the ravages of this awful virus. Mom and the surviving three kittens were discharged from the vet after a couple of days of intensive supportive care and were moved to a home with a foster mom who is well-versed on the supportive care they require to continue to fight this virus. Honey, the mom, is still very ill and not able to nurse so the three surviving kittens, Bailey, Shiner and Stella, are being bottle fed and all are receiving supportive care around the clock.

The cost for care so far is a bit more than $6800 for their ICU time at the hospital. This amount does not include costs being incurred as they receive care in their current foster home where they continue to fight this serious virus. This image shows the list of supportive care interventions for Bailey (just one of the kittens) and the cost of $1181.95 for just this one kitten and the bottom line invoice amount for the entire family which came to $6895.85. As you might imagine, this care is very expensive and is an unexpected drain on the rescue's resources!

Details about Feline Panleukopenia

FP is a contagious virus caused by the feline parvovirus. Kittens are most severely affected. There is no cure and intensive care and treatment are critical to support the cat's condition with medications and fluids until its own body and immune system can fight off the virus. Without such care, up to 90% of cats with FP may die.

FP treatment focuses on keeping infected cats hydrated, providing nutrients and preventing secondary infection. Although antibiotics don’t kill the virus, they are necessary because infected cats are at a higher risk of bacterial infections because their immune systems are not fully functioning.
