Howard Roman
Transplant Type: Lung
Update: Howard received a transplant on July 9, 2019!
Howard Roman is fighting with I.P.F. In July 2016, he was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Howard’s lung function has declined since his diagnosis, and he now relies on supplemental oxygen to help him breathe. Doctors say a lung transplant is critical to his survival.
During such a challenging time, Howard is thankful for the love and support of his wife, Chanderwatie, and their family and friends. Howard is a father and a grandfather, and his illness causes his family a lot of worry. He looks forward to receiving a transplant that will allow him breathe freely and be the active husband, father, and grandfather he longs to be. He enjoys playing with his grandchildren, but his health limits his activities now. Howard wants nothing more than to be healthy again so he will have many more years to enjoy life with his family. But right now, he needs your help.
Unfortunately, Howard’s hope for a new life comes at a very high price.
The average lung transplant costs approximately $861,000, and that’s only the beginning. Even with health insurance, which will cover the cost of the transplant, he faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of his life, he will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are very expensive, and they’re as critical to his survival as the transplant itself.
Howard continues to work as a maintenance tech, but it is becoming very difficult as he struggles to breathe, and he’s not sure how much longer he will be able to work. When he receives his transplant, he will be off for an extended recovery time, further adding to his financial burdens.
