Louise is 18 years old now, and she believes that she deserves to be addressed as Miss Louise (or even Your Highness), out of respect for her advanced age. These days she sleeps a lot, but she always wants to be in the same room with us. She loves to be held and cuddled, and begs to be picked up. Although she misses her partner-in-crime, Thelma, who is no longer with us, she also thinks that the house is really only big enough for one cat.
Louise moved with us to College Station from New Mexico; she and Thelma had earlier accompanied us on our move from Newport, Rhode Island, to Albuquerque, so she is a well-traveled cat. We adopted both of them from the Potter League for Animals in Newport and are testaments to the difference that animal shelters make in the lives of animals and their people.
Working...
She considers paper to be one of the major food groups. Her signature move was (and still sometimes is) to stick her head into a briefcase, rummage around, pull out a piece of paper, and dash off triumphantly with it! And no paper was safe. I occasionally have had to explain to my students what happened to the corners of their papers; and once I had to ask at the bank if it was a problem cashing a check adorned with tooth marks!
Louise is still doing great, even if she has slowed down. She brings us joy, and we are grateful for every day we have with her.
