My friend Jason texted me on New Years Eve and reminded me that we were celebrating three decades of friendship! I couldn’t believe it – we had stayed friends all these years. Yes, life made us lose touch months at a time, but we laughed at all the memories three decades had brought us – High School Prom, Peachtree Road Races, NASCAR races, summers on Lake Lanier, but most special of them all was the process of getting his diabetic alert/CF Service Dog, Cersei from Canine Assistants and the time spent with her.

Jason was in a terrible car accident last week. Life is so unfair sometimes. I would do anything to have one last hug, one last laugh and even one last late night text asking if I was still awake, inevitably showing me a picture of Cersei’s vomit or showing me she did something so cute, and he just had to share it with me.

Jason truly lived every day, there’s no other way to describe it. He always knew he was on borrowed time living with Cystic Fibrosis, but in turn, he always jumped into whatever adventure was next with both feet in. He took the time to be truly interested in conversations, he cared deeply about his family and friends, and he was always up for trying something new – he was not going to let a disease hold him back from all the experiences life threw at him.

Jason passed away peacefully this morning and no doubt, embarked on the greatest adventure he will take. I take comfort in knowing Cersei was there for him when he needed her the most, and out of all the fun times we had together, seeing him so happy the last few months with her by his side was priceless. She was a special gift and I feel blessed to be a tiny part of bringing them together.

Today is #GivingTuesdayNow and I am raising funds for Canine Assistants to honor Jason and Cersei and make certain that more dogs just like her get placed with those who need a hero. She never left his side at the crash site, and even licked his face in attempt to wake him until help arrived. She’s a true hero and I am proud to be raising much needed funds for Canine Assistants so we can continue  to place service dogs at no cost to those in need.
