What if you were living on borrowed time?

Tony Palau is awaiting a new lease on life. Twenty years ago, he was diagnosed with diabetes and high blood pressure. Over time, it has taken a toll on his kidneys, and he is now facing kidney failure. Tony’s illness leaves him tired and affects his quality of life. Doctors say a kidney transplant is necessary.

During this difficult time, Tony is thankful for the love and support of his wife of 37 years, Esther, and their family and friends. Tony and Esther have four children and eight grandchildren and his health prevents him from being the active husband, father, and grandfather he longs to be. He looks forward to receiving a transplant that will give him back his energy and allow him more quality time with his family. Tony used to be very active, and enjoys baseball, softball, going for walks, swimming, and exercising—but his health no longer allows him to do those things. He wants nothing more than to be healthy so he can resume an active lifestyle and be able to play with his grandchildren. But right now, he needs your help.

Unfortunately, Tony’s hope for a new life comes at a very high price.

The average kidney transplant costs more than $414,000, and that’s only the beginning. Even with insurance, which will cover a portion of the transplant costs, he still faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of his life, he will need follow-up care and anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are expensive, and they’re as critical to his survival as the transplant itself.

Although Tony is still working, he had to cut his work schedule down to four days a week, and can no longer work overtime hours. When he receives a transplant, he will be off work for an extended time, further adding to his financial burdens.

What if your life depended on the compassion and generosity of others?

The National Foundation for Transplants (NFT) is working with volunteers and supporters to help relieve the growing burden of expenses for Tony. NFT has been assisting transplant patients with fundraising support for more than 35 years. Your gift—of $25, $50, $100 or more—will enable NFT to provide Tony with the financial support he desperately needs.
