On October 11, 2022, Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn came to Floyd to perform for their second time at The Floyd Country Store. When Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn come to town, it’s a gift to the Floyd community. This time around, they spent some time with The Handmade Music School community. It was a special moment for all involved and captured the spirit of how keeping traditions alive builds and strengthens community.

Back in March 2022, we received another special gift from Béla when he and the Newport Festival Foundation donated to The Handmade Music School. This donation was in conjunction with his 2022 performance at The Newport Folk Festival. The funds from this donation–and every other donation we receive–goes to support scholarships for students at Handmade Music School. In addition, funding will support other important programs like Music of Our Mountains, Handmade at Home and overhead costs such as staffing and equipment.

This Giving Tuesday, we invite you to "Be Like Béla". Make a donation to Handmade Music School to help us achieve our mission of building and strengthening community through  old-time, bluegrass, and traditional music and dance in Floyd, Virginia and beyond.

The Music of Our Mountains (MOOM) project will tell the unique and, until now obscure, story of Floyd’s role in the legend of American roots music, dance, and culture with expertly-woven storytelling, archival resources, and the shoots and branches of a new generation carrying our traditions forward.  This engaging, comprehensive resource will expand our understanding of contributions to our traditions from women and minorities, while providing unparalleled accessibility, engagement, and connection between Floyd’s musical and cultural heritage and the world -- at a time when we are starved for connection to community. Check out Music of Our Mountains HERE.

The Handmade Music School exists thanks to the generosity of people like you. Your donation towards our General Operating expenses will support programming and outreach to help us cultivate and strengthen community through music, dance, art, food experiences rooted in Appalachian traditions. Our General Operating needs include staffing, rent, equipment, marketing, and professional services.
