About Comunidad Materna en Utah
Comunidad Materna en Utah (CMU) is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to empowering expectant mothers and their families by providing comprehensive support and guidance throughout the journey of pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. As a collective of perinatal community health workers and doulas, CMU is dedicated to improving parenting experiences and promoting self-advocacy among their clients. CMU provides, among other services, prenatal education, emotional support groups, breastfeeding support, home visits, and a community doula program. Approximately 90% of their clients are migrants from Latin America living in Salt Lake and Millard County. Moreover, most of their participants lack health insurance and come from low-income communities.
The funds raised from the 2024 UMBA Juneteenth Charity Challenge will be used to support CMU's Community Doula Project. Doula services are often inaccessible to low-income individuals and communities of color due to the lack of insurance coverage. As such, this initiative, which is modeled after doula programs in other states, will fund an expansion of their doula program and provide more expectant mothers with essential education and support both before and after pregnancy.
