Friends of Peace Park Sheboygan is asking for your help to accomplish our mission of inspiring a more peaceful world through the development and beautification of Sheboygan Peace Park.

We may be a small group, but we have done mighty things and will continue to do them with help from our friends and our community.

OUR PROJECT
In this campaign, we are seeking funding for work on Phase Two of the development of the park. This phase will include more shrubs and perennials along a paved path on the west side of the park and a paved patio with a seat wall that will offer a spectacular view of Lake Michigan.

Plants selected for Phase Two were chosen to provide food for bees, butterflies and other insects. Five flowering pear trees have already been planted in that area. Their flowers in spring will attract bees and early butterflies and their tiny fruit (about the size of a cherry tomato) will help to feed the birds and squirrels in the fall.

The cost estimate for this project is $48,336. Through donations and grants, we hope to be able to begin this work in the spring of 2021.

As in the first phase, the plantings for Phase Two have been chosen for their hardiness to survive the chilly Wisconsin winters and also for their color, texture, scent and time of blooming.

PAST PROJECT
In the fall of 2018, work on Phase One began along the north side of the park. The project was completed in September 2019. This project featured a large patio around the Peace Pole, a smaller patio made for the "hydration station" (a drinking fountain for people and dogs) and a paved path between the two patios.

A gravel and granite path outlines the perimeter of an area designated as the Sister City Peace Gardens. A path of stepping stones separates the three gardens named in honor of Sheboygan and her Sister Cities: Esslingen, Germany and Tsubame, Japan.

If anything in our small park speaks to the power and the possibility of peace in our world, it is the Sister City Peace Gardens. Germany and Japan were enemies of the US in World War II but now they are our allies. Peace IS possible.

Various trees, shrubs and perennial flowers fill the gardens and surround the patios. The plants in each Peace Garden are representative of plants typical to the cities they honor - edelweiss and brunnera in the Esslingen Garden, iris and hosta in the Tsubame Garden and sedum and salvia in the Sheboygan Garden.

As we look ahead now to Phase Two, our focus is on drawing park visitors into the middle of the park. The seat wall is sure to be a focal point for visitors. This feature will offer an expansive view of Lake Michigan. Whether relaxing in the summer sunshine or watching the lake roil and crash during a winter storm, this area will provide one of the best places in Sheboygan to enjoy the experience.

There has always been a need and a desire for peace in the world as witnessed by the following:

For there to be peace in our world, we must have peace between nations.
For there to be peace between nations, we must have peace between cities.
For there to be peace between cities, we must have peace between neighbors.
For there to be peace between neighbors, we must have peace within our families.
For there to be peace within families, we must have peace within our hearts.
Lao Tzu, Chinese Philosopher: 6th Century BCE

It is true that one small park in one small city in Wisconsin will not bring about world peace, but, if by being at the park and feeling peace in our hearts, we carry that peace back to our families and our neighbors, then peace is possible. We contend that visiting the park and lingering for a time amidst its calm beauty, you will leave feeling refreshed and empowered to reengage with your life and to face again the challenges that await you. In this way, peace IS possible.
