Running for a Better Oakland (RBO, www.rboakland.org)) is a non-profit organization that encourages Kindergarten-12th grade Oakland students to develop healthy lifestyles through running. By building confidence, setting goals, providing training and encouragement, RBO gives students the values for achievement and hard work that they can draw on for all areas of their lives. RBO aims to remove financial barriers for students’ participation and ensure that program participants reflect the diverse community of Oakland.
I would like to dedicate this fundraising towards RBO Senior Scholarship program. This program has experienced tremendous growth since its inception in 2017. We are proud to announce that this Spring eleven resilient seniors will be graduating and ready to attend college.
In the Fall, despite the pandemic, RBO was determined to offer a tuition-free program to all its students. Students, Mentors and Parents prevailed by consistently attending weekly Zoom practices led by RBO coaches and completing virtual races. Among them, eleven seniors have persevered, despite those stressful times, showing consistent participation while working on their college applications and studying remotely. They are ready to tackle one more challenge to meet their eligibility requirement for the scholarship program . They will complete 100 mile either solo or as a team over 8 weeks in addition to completing three virtual runs, writing and essay and attending zoom practices. Consistency will be the key to their success. RBO coaches and mentors will follow them virtually and will check with them on a regular basis but they will perform their runs on their own. This will test once more their perseverance.
By the time seniors will graduate they will have lived for over one year with the pandemic, they will need more than ever your and our support to start with their college life. Students often use their scholarship money to upgrade their computer and/or use it towards their college funds. Last year, thanks to your incredible generosity, RBO was able to double its scholarship budget awarding a larger donation to all 10 RBO graduates and five RBO college students who had remained involved with the program. Students and their parents were extremely appreciative especially because of the challenges the families started experiencing with the beginning of the pandemic. I understand that many of you just like the students and their families may have also been impacted but any level of support will make a huge difference for our students,
