Laurie Boyce
Transplant Type: Kidney
Laurie Boyce is awaiting a new lease on life. She first realized something was wrong when she began to struggle with daily water retention. Laurie switched physicians in order to find the cause of her health issues, and after visiting four different specialists, she was diagnosed with Primary Membranous Nephropathy. Eventually, she was diagnosed with End Stage Renal Disease. Laurie has been on dialysis since 2018, and it leaves her tired and takes a toll on her quality of life. Doctors say a kidney transplant is critical.
During this difficult time, Laurie is grateful for the love and support of her husband of nearly 36 years, Lowell, and their family and friends. Laurie and Lowell have a 22-year-old son who lives with them. Her illness prevents her from being the active wife and mother she longs to be, and her husband and son share the responsibility of taking care of her, transporting her to dialysis and medical appointments, and running errands.
Laurie looks forward to receiving a transplant that will allow her to feel like herself again and free her from dialysis. She is the secretary and treasurer of the Western Steam Fiends club, dedicated to preserving steam tractors and steam powered equipment, and her illness prevents her from being a part of their yearly steam school. Laurie also enjoys going for walks on the beach, vacationing with her family, and working in her flower garden, but her health now prevents those things as well. She wants nothing more than to be healthy so she can live her life to the fullest, resume the activities she loves, and no longer worry so much about her health. But right now, she needs your help.
The average kidney transplant costs more than $414,000, and that’s only the beginning. Even with insurance, which will cover a portion of the transplant costs, Laurie still faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of her life, she will need follow-up care and anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are very expensive, and they’re as critical to her survival as the transplant itself.
When she receives her transplant, Laurie will have to stay near the transplant center while she recovers, incurring substantial expenses for travel, food, and lodging. Her declining health forced her to stop working, further adding to her financial burdens.
