I didn't set out for a career in environmental education. I originally wanted to study lion behavior in Africa! Or at least be a zookeeper. But my first zoo job wasn't with the lions - it was working as a summer camp counselor at the Montgomery Zoo. I got to educate campers about the environment all while handling snakes, eagles, and bats! After that I was hooked. I worked in environmental education positions at zoos, gardens, and even the happiest place on earth - Disney World! When I moved to North Carolina in 2016 I joined Environmental Educators of North Carolina (EENC) and went to my first EENC conference. I was blown away! I was inspired by all the amazing environmental educators I met and came away with SO many ideas for EE programming. Now I'm on EENC's board of directors and I get to lead workshops and help plan events for other environmental educators. I see first hand how hard the board works and I am honored to be a part of it.

Why Does Environmental Education Matter?

Environmental education is critical. It provides time in - and a connection to - the outdoors which research has shown to improve physical, mental, and emotional health. Learners not only gain environmental content knowledge, but also support to become civically engaged leaders. As such, environmental education is just as important for our participants as it is for the planet.

EENC believes everyone, regardless of their background, where they live, or their demographics, should feel welcome in environmental education activities to reap these various benefits. Now, more than ever, we need to work together. It will take people of all ages and backgrounds working together to make informed decisions about increasingly complex environmental issues affecting the economy, public health/safety, and shared natural resources on which all life depends.

You can read more about what EENC has accomplished this year to support this, and what we’re planning for next year here.
