HOGU Life Skills Outreach Campaign

Hope of the Generation Uganda (HOGU) is a rural community-based organization that has been working to promote the health and well-being of youth in Uganda since 2005. HOGU plans to carry out more youth soccer camps and menstrual hygiene management workshops over the coming year.  Each 1 week soccer life skills camp brings together 60 students from 3 different schools from the villages around HOGU's catchment area. HOGU also plans to visit schools interested in training students on how to make their own reusable sanitary pads.  Both of these initiatives keep kids in school, facilitates a better learning environment for them and keeps young people informed about their own health.  We need your help to make this happen!  

Some background information: HOGU carries out several activities throughout the year, the two we are raising funds for incorporate much needed life skill training into the sports that boys and girls  play such as soccer and volleyball.  In the sports clubs and camps children learn how to set goals, plan for the future, make positive choices, and learn about health topics that are relevant to them such as HIV prevention and menstrual hygiene management. Sports clubs are a proven way to engage youth in healthy dialogue and provide them with social support as they navigate adolescence. Menstrual hygiene management is important for girls to have control over during these critical years. Poor management can lead to missing school days and disruption to their lessons.  Arming girls and boys with an understanding about their own bodies and health and providing the tools to take care of themselves leads to positive outcomes as they transition to adulthood.
