~My birth/placenta accreta story~
On November 17th 2019 ,
I wasn’t feeling good and was having some back pain ,so I took my blood pressure and it was pretty high and I had some bad swelling in my legs and feet ,So we decided to go to my local hospital to make sure that the blood pressure was right and turns out it was ,so I called the on call doctor and he wanted me to come in to get checked out ,so we got down to Charleston (where My midwife was) and got checked out and my blood pressure just kept going up (highs of 150/100s) ,I felt fine just back pain ,so they decided to keep me and induce me at 4am
Baby boy was doing great. So they started inducing me at 4am and In just an hour my water broke but I still wasn’t dilated a lot so we kept waiting and I started feeling some strong contractions and then a second bag of water broke and I started to hurt really bad and was dilated enough to get an epidural so they started giving me the epidural and I was in soo much pain that I don’t really remember a lot but the anesthesiologist was teaching someone how to do a epidural as I was in so much pain but they finally got it and I got some relief but there was something wrong I kept feeling a very bad pain in one spot so they tried giving me some more medicine and it didn’t help ,so they came back in and gave me a shot of medicine through the epidural and that still didn’t work ,(they did that twice) and by this time I was in so much pain I was blacking out and don’t remember a lot but they said the doctor came in and checked me and I was dilated to 9 but baby boy wasn’t coming down so he was going to just do a c-section so I wouldn’t have to sit in pain so we go to have the c-section and i was still in pain and wasn’t getting numb so they had to take my epidural out and give me a spinal tap and as soon as I was numb they started and I fell asleep because I finally got some relief and on November 18th at 4:43pm I woke up to the sound of my baby boy crying , i got to see him and hear him cry but then I heard one of the doctors say “what’s that?” And the doctor doing the surgery said “i don’t know give me a minute”
And by this time I was passing out and I remember the doctor looked over the drape and said “hey are you awake I need you to wake up “ and I was still going in and out so another doctor came over to me and said “hey you have to wake up ,your placenta grew into your uterus and you are bleeding out ,we have to take it ,it’s either this or your life” I said “okay” so they took my uterus out (left my ovaries though) and they had to give me 2 pints of blood and since I didn’t have the epidural anymore the spinal tap wasn’t going to last long enough so they had to give me something to put me to sleep so ,I don’t really remember anything after that until I was in recovery for a few hours because I was in and out. So,if I would have had him naturally and they pulled out the placenta like they normally do I would have bled to death .
They had NO idea anything was wrong until they got him out !
And I had to stay in the hospital from Monday until Thursday because my blood pressure wouldn’t stay down but it finally came down enough to come home but I was on blood pressure medicine for alittle while to see if it will go back to normal and it did for awhile but it’s still up and down they are not sure why.
But Now the baby is 17 months old ,so smart and healthy! And that’s all I could ever ask for!
I hope that my experience will help others and educate some and help them be aware of accreta.
Please donate to this amazing organization to help them spread awareness of accreta to people and doctors so they can saves lives!
