For over 30 years, Bridges to Independence (formerly the Arlington-Alexandria Coalition for the Homeless) has been serving homeless women and families. Sixty percent of our clients are children, who must deal with the anxieties and difficulties of homelessness on a daily basis.

Two years ago, we started a new program – the b2i Youth Leadership Academy – to provide homeless teenagers with life-enriching opportunities designed to break the cycle of poverty. Our youth receive training in public speaking, interviewing, networking, and life skills, and are given the support they need to succeed in school and beyond. Many of our youth come into the program withdrawn, shy, and guarded, but after several months, we see their confidence skyrocket and they begin to focus on goals for the future.

With our help, homeless youth have:

  • Completed internships at the Smithsonian.
  • Started a running club and run in several 5K races, with some of our youth placing first in their age divisions.
  • Learned business, public speaking and interviewing skills.
  • Created a 4H club, attended 4H camp, and will be 4H camp counselors this summer.
  • Attended leadership camps and training.
  • Participated in clubs and activities in and out of school. Without our help, extracurricular activities just aren’t possible for many of our youth.

With the right opportunities, these kids can succeed far beyond their expectations. We are so proud of our young leaders and thrilled with the success of the Youth Leadership Academy.

We also offer services to children ages 5-12, the "Bridge Kids." The program is designed to provide students with safe, positive and fun learning environments, positive peer group experiences, opportunities for character development and hands-on activities that hold students' interest and develop their skills and sense of success. Activities include homework time, reading support, active play, swimming, cooking, nutritious snacks and field trips.

Together we can to encourage homeless kids to achieve great things. THANK YOU for your support of Bridges to Independence!
